Last month, the Recover Foundation participated in the LXXVI Annual Meeting of the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN), where it had the opportunity to share its experience and commitment to neurological health in Africa.
Cristina Rodrigo Ferrán, manager of the International Training and Volunteering programme, together with François Roger Nguepy Keubo, nurse, clinical psychologist, psychopathologist and professor of psychology at the University of Dschang (Cameroon), gave a lecture entitled "Recover Foundation: a partner in neurology for Africa"..
In their speech, they endorsed the WHO slogan, "no health without mental healthhighlighting how in countries such as Cameroon mental health includes areas such as neurology, psychology and psychiatry.. In addition, they presented worrying data on the region, such as the shortage of neurologists: only 33 for more than 30 million inhabitants, equivalent to 0.00001 neurologist per inhabitant. In contrast, in Spain, some hospitals have more than 30 neurologists in a single centre.
They also noted that only 26% of African countries have guidelines for addressing neurological disorders, despite the fact that the burden of these diseases on the continent is markedly higher than in other regions of the world.
From the Recover Foundation, we thank the Spanish Society of Neurology for the invitation to make our work visible and to continue working together for equitable access to neurological health in Africa.
