The Recover Foundation supports an ophthalmological mission in South Sudan that has managed to operate on more than a hundred cataract patients.

South Sudan Eye Mission

La misión tuvo lugar del 4 al 19 de abril y en ella participaron ocho profesionales sanitarios voluntarios: cuatro oftalmólogos, un residente de oftalmología, un óptico, un pediatra y una enfermera.

En total, se exploraron 604 pacientes en las campañas, de los cuales 130 requirieron de intervención quirúrgica, la gran mayoría (118) por cataratas.

Según cuenta la propia García Sandoval, la novedad más importante en esta campaña ha sido contar con “un maravilloso microscopio quirúrgico Zeiss nuevo, importado de Alemania cuya financiación ha corrido a cargo de la generosa Fundación Recover que de nuevo este año nos ha ayudado”.

Este microscopio proporciona una excelente calidad de visión e iluminación y, además, cuenta con visor del ayudante, lo que permite capacitar al personal local en cada una de las cirugías.

Con esta nueva misión, damos continuidad a una colaboración que se inició el año pasado en este país con el objetivo de mejorar la salud oftalmológica y reducir los casos de ceguera por cataratas.

“En cada paciente ciego bilateral que vemos caminar por sí solo, el día después de la cirugía, encontramos el sentido del esfuerzo realizado por todos”, asegura Blanca.
