Africa is the youngest of the continents. Whilst among its slopes, jungles and coasts are born 39 babies per 1,000 population, in Europe there are 10 neonates, thus having a mean age of 23 years, in contrast to the Spanish figure of 42. Figures that are reflected in every report and in every piece of data on maternal and child health, starting with healthcare personnel: while an average hospital in the capital of Cameroon deals with over 2,000 births a year, with a base of 45,000 patients, at the Madrid hospital of La Paz, a benchmark for delivery volume in Europe, 5,700 are seen, with a base of more than 200,000 patients.
At Recover Foundation, where we have 10 years of I work in Cameroon and other neighbouring countries, we are aware that the high birth rates on the African continent, and more specifically in sub-Saharan Africa, do not stand alone. The young continent also bears the higher rates of maternal mortality, maternal and neonatal and, for this reason, we have prepared this 1st Recover Report on maternal and child health, which brings together the most relevant data and figures and proposes the sum of the effort of the various international agents for the achievement of the ODS set out in the 2030 Agenda.
