Every 25th of May, it is celebrated that Africa Day, a date that focuses on the opportunities, challenges and realities of a continent where millions of people still encounter difficulties in accessing specialised healthcare.
At Fundación Recover, we have been working for almost 20 years to strengthen health systems in Africa and facilitate access to medical treatments to people who cannot receive them in their home countries.
One of those people is Marlène, a 26-year-old patient from Burundi who arrived in Spain thanks to the Patients programme from Recover Foundation after living for nine years with a serious health problem that severely affected their mobility and quality of life.
Marlène was treated at the Ruber Internacional Hospital by the traumatologist Inmaculada Arrayas and her team. She presented with a severe and prolonged infection in a hip prosthesis, as well as severe involvement in the other, which made a complex intervention necessary to remove the damaged prosthesis and implant a new one.
Today, their condition is favourable and they are continuing to make progress in their recovery.
In the video accompanying this article, Marlène expresses her gratitude for the care received from the medical staff, the nursing team and the volunteers of the Recover Foundation, whose support has been essential throughout the entire process.
Stories like his serve as a reminder that behind every treatment is a person who needs a chance.
Thanks to the support of partners, donors, volunteers and collaborating healthcare centres, Fundación Recover can continue to drive programmes that make it possible to care for patients with complex conditions and strengthen healthcare across various countries on the African continent.
This Africa Day, help us go further 💚👇🏽
With your help, more people like Marlène can access specialist treatment and receive the care they need.
